Play, Play, Play

This studio brief revolves around a single word my word being 'Band". The task was to produce three illustrations of a single word that each communicate a different meaning of the word. Each image being A3 and without digital processes this is a monumental task for me. Working on such a scale will challenge my drawing skills.

Firstly I took into consideration which spelling of the word I would use. Using the word 'Banned' appealed to me as illustrating a restriction of sorts could have value, however the definitions of this word were in short supply so I opted for 'Band'.

My initial ideas concentrated on this idea of unity with a band of brothers and the use of rubber bands within images. The word also instinctively brings music to mind for me, specifically metal. Drawing music is not a simple task so I allocated the type as image to this. Before deciding on this solely I looked into how I could use 'Band' in different ways with text. I toyed with the word bandwidth - drawing the internet appealed to me as a challenge and I was able to generate concepts involving lots of  0's and 1's as well as ethernet cables. I began to start drawing evil octopuses formed from 0's and 1's and realised that I had worked far astray of the original idea.

In order to link the text as image to music I applied various fonts, used in what I consider to be iconic metal band's logos, to the word band. The most appealing to me thus far is the Iron Maiden font (centre, left) as I believe it is the most recognisable in relation to metal.
