Reading more into Fiennes's history some slightly wacky stories surface. These say a lot about his personality and I like the idea of making a tribute to him as a man not just his recorded achievements.
Following a solo expedition to the arctic Fiennes was left with frostbite in part of his right hand, namely some of his fingertips. After consulting with a surgeon and with a foreseeable bill of £6000 Sir Ranulph went to the shed at the bottom of the garden and cut the affected parts of his hand off with a handsaw. This says a lot about his rebellious nature.
Another anecdote that speaks volumes of Fiennes's character is that of when he and a friend attempted to blow up a dam, built by 20th Century Fox for a film set. Their reason for doing so was to restore the areas natural beauty. A deed worthy of recognition, even if it resulted in his dismissal from the SAS and a hefty fine.
In a more lighthearted (yet rebellious) frame of mind Ranulph released a greased up piglet into a military staff ball, causing complete havoc. His attitude ceases to amaze me, and it is this that I hope to capture in one of my postcards.
