OUIL 406: Visual Communication: End of Module Evaluation

1. What skills have you developed through this brief and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

'I see faces' was the first time I have ever worked with animation and therefore was a massive stepping stone for me. I met the brief in creating three moving images and I think to some merit. I challenged myself with a particularly complicated dancing chap.

Working with vectors in 'Greetings from...' was an enormous challenge for me again as I had never worked in this way before. Under the circumstances I think I was able to make some worthy images using Illustrator.

2. What approaches to/methods of image making have you developed and how have they informed your concept development process?

Each brief within this module has challenged how I like to make images. It's changed me in that I am now more adaptable. I am more now comfortable in tackling a brief using different applicable software and can work towards resolved work know the limitations.

3. What strengths can you identify within your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

My drawing throughout this unit has been consistent, I would argue that I've applied my skills to the best of my ability on each piece of practical work completed. I was also happy with the animation and I think it worked well with my tone of voice. I'd like to go onto include more animation in my work.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

There are two weaknesses that i'd like to highlight both linked: consistency and time keeping. I feel the consistency of my drawing can also weigh me down, I graft hard on every drawing and this can force me to fall in love with ideas to quickly. Working like this also puts me behind on quantity. In order to address this i'm going to try my hardest to simplify my initial drawings and roughs in order to generate a range of ideas - resulting in better work that doesn't just look a bit flash because i've worked into it.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what you would expect to gain from doing these?

Blog as I go - leaving me more time at the end of briefs to develop concepts, resulting in better work.

Simplify my initial drawing - learn not to work into everything for to long, instead working on a range of ideas, the better ones developed later.

Try new stuff - before these briefs in my stubborn nature i'd stuck to working in the way I felt comfortable. Being forced by briefs to try new software and techniques has been highly enjoyable and I'll learn a lot more if I progress with an open mind.

Don't cut corners - I need to simply put more time into developing work to generate better concepts.

Get out more - Throughout this unit I have mostly been stuck at a desk or computer, putting down a bit. I enjoyed the first hand research during visual narratives and my work can benefit from it.
