OUIL 504 End Of Module Evaluation

This Module has been one whole big scary change for me. I've learnt a lot I think because I've been less of a stubborn asshole. The briefs have challenged my ways of image making and I'd like to think I've shown that I am not as two dimensional as I was last year. Being required to work with different mediums was most likely the start of my transition. Ive learnt loads about the use of shape as well as colour, both never playing too much of a role in my practice. Working Adams's work has also been a great experience.

Lino cuts is where it started to get exciting for me on this project. The way my brain usually works to bring an image together uses layers and mark making, I allow myself to chip slowly away at it. With Lino cuts I was completely out of my depth as you have to commit, luckily I found a way of working with it that suited me.

The After Effects software was also entirely alien to me (pardon the pun). It really did stress me out to learn it but I think by the end I had a good grip on the basics. What makes After Effects exciting for me is the way I could apply textures, just like Photoshop. I wouldn't mind using it in the future as well, I think I could make something stronger than what I've put together for this unit with gained experience.

Screen printing has been another big step for me. All my screen printing previous has been crap. Simply because I've tried to control it too much. Some of my marbled prints for this module are something I'm really I'm really proud of. Mainly because it's a new process Iv'e found, it's unlike anything I've ever made and I'd like to keep it within my practice

Working from books has been great, making your own interpretation of the text allowed me to engage with it. I've already started working in this way in some personal work - drawing from Rudyard Kiplings 'The Man Who Would Be King'.

Looking forward I want to keep all that I've learnt, mostly shape and vivd colour close, but without leaving my drawing behind. I need a way of combing them, I hope to explore this within the next module.

A downside to this module on my part has been time keeping. To begin with I was prioritising a zine leaving me a little behind for most of the Module. It then took me a lot of time to learn the new processes. I would have liked to pay more attention to my animated work however the way I had organised my time left little room for experimentation with complicated moving images.

Another small downer was my choice of author. As I'd said I've already read a fair bit of Adams's work, and I do really like it. It's just that by the end of this long project I'd got a bit bored of it. If I had picked an author that was new to me I don't think there would have been quite as much of the strain on my imagination as I had expected. Yes, being such a long module I did loose the will to live here and there so I was forced to explore more of Adams's work which is fine, I just enjoy the variety in having shorter briefs.

In all I'm really happy with how this unit worked out. I've been pushed to make new and exciting work. I'm happy with my resolved work however it's the development work for some of it that has really excited me.
