Having checked back with the group on all of the painted designs I scanned the painted characters, I had to get reacquainted with the pen tool. I opened the paintings in Photoshop and drew each shape, layering correctly for the animators character rigging using the pen tool.
To begin with drawing these took forever, I got very frustrated at the time. However as I progressed with the divers I sped up and began to enjoy working in this way. Being forced to make images like this has taught me quite a lot when it comes to the pen tool.
The three characters are the same as they were on paper apart from the colours, I used the very specific MSC colour palette. Originally I pushed the idea that the divers would be in all black as to stand out against the blue of the water. Unfortunately everybody disagreed with that arguing that the characters would look dark or menacing, whereas we should be putting MSC in a good light.
This still shows the divers against one of the backdrops. I still think the divers need to be darker in order to stand out. Unfortunately my colleagues still disagree and are set on these bright blues. The blue is the same as the blue on the MSC logo and it is important to make that visual connection but I think it's worth sacrificing that for characters that stand out from the background.
