Applied illustration has been a really enjoyable module for me, Ive learnt a lot about my own practice and developed both my researching and practical skills. I’m really glad I chose ‘publishing and book cover design’ following my positive experience with a responsive book cover brief. I wanted to challenge myself somewhat in choosing publishing. I feel that my skills relating to book covers has improved. I feel more confident using type for example, the use of typography being a small challenge for me throughout the module.
I’ve also challenged both my print and digital skills during this module. I experimented more with Linocut than ever before and have developed methods of image making combining both experimental textured prints in tandem with digital drawing. My understanding of shape is stronger than before the module also, before I felt using shape in excess made image making too simple however I now feel comfortable making images that are strongly shape driven.
I did also have some downfalls over the module. Looking back at my work I’m really pleased with the resulting images, however I could have done more. Perhaps proposing illustrated pages within the books, I could have also taken a further step in mocking up websites from witch to sell the products.
Another common and seemly undying weakness of mine is organisation. I worked on my images almost right unto the deadline. I put a lot of time into them, although on reflection if I had began work on them earlier I could have allowed more time for the mockups. In future modules I hope to plan my time more effectively perhaps leaving more time at the end for collateral. I was also rather slack on some of the blogging, I hope next year to make sure I blog each day recording all that I've done as I go taking some of the pressure of as I get towards the end of each module.
Overall as mentioned I really enjoyed the module and think its primary benefit to me has been development of my practice. I now have a reliable and enjoyable process of building images with consistency whereas before I felt my methods were all over the place.
