OUIL603 - Monolith

Been contacted by local skate company: Monolith, I was really excited work with these kind of lads, it being a new opportunity as a get in with the skateboarding community / subculture of sorts in Leeds. I will hopefully put my work into new contexts through this brief, it being my first commissioned T design and could be a foot in the door for sticker / deck designs (anything else skating), all exciting things to get my work into.

Monolith's skate wear designs consists of a very modern, symmetrical and somewhat architectural series. The client explains that he expects my shape based imagery to work well alongside their simplistic and clean aesthetic,  inspiration for them coming from massive international skateboarding company Polar. Polar Skate Co (right) collaborate with different artist for various different projects, applying designs to many different products in tandem with their clean cut logo and type. Joe from Monolith specifically referenced Polar's work with 'Pontus Alv' (right) who's work consists of simple shape based figures and faces, some of which actually depicted skateboarding. I really like how Polar uses the artwork as the focus of the simple design, it's bold and recognizable as a Polar board. This is what Monolith hope to achieve from our 'collaboration'.

I met up with Joe to discuss the design. He was very keen on letting me 'do my thing' giving me a lot of freedom, specifying only that the work must be; bold / shape based, include printed textures found in some of my work and be appropriate for use as a single colour screen print on shirts and possibly a following edition of screen prints. When it came to what the image is actually going to be the objective is "strange shapey creature. He gave this collage found on my Instagram as another reference.

As the reference of my work is collage I plan to begin by playing with collage and some roughs as well as T mockups to give the guys an idea of how my work will exist on shirts alongside their aesthetic.
