OUIL603 - Nava Mantra

Met the lead singer of local band - Nava Mantra at an arts market. We had a chat and he explained that he'd be interested to commission me for the bands first EP cover. I gave him a business card and later recieved an email asking to meet and discuss the design with the whole band. I met them all at a pub and defined what it is they were after. They were very enthusiastic about my works aesthetic and kept the brief very open to my interpretation. The specifications were; it must contain lizards, the text "Life S" and the current (already designed) logo. With this information I was left to it and got back to them within the next couple of days.

Assuming that the band would be happy as long as I made the image consistent with my current work on Instagram and liked my Lizard design I was very keen to impress them. I began by just drawing / collaging some lizards in Photoshop, developing this cover that I felt was very strong. In all the excitement I sent a colour and black and white variant off, not considering that I should probably give them some more options as roughs - this would later come back to bite me.

The band's feedback wasn't to good, they said that this wasn't the direction they wanted the work to go and that it needed to be more "grunge". Max asked me to pause for a couple of days while they discuss how to get what they want out of me. What I've learnt from this is that I need to initially provide clients with a multitude of options to develop, sending a finished image will scare them a bit!
