Tell An Untold Story Pt 1 - The Visual Journalist - Dark Arches / Rats

My second days research consisted of a second visit to Leeds Dark Arches. The first visit was unsuccessful considering I was escorted from the premiss for taking pictures. Certain sections of the Arches are known to be abandoned and in a search for a rival story to draw (to monks) I intended to explore these. I jumped a barrier attempting to get into these abandoned rooms and was swiftly apprehended by security guards. Fortunately on the way in I did manage to take a few photographs.

On the way out I spotted three rats scurrying in the shadows. I then chose to try and make something of this research day and ask people in the dark arches shops how often they would spot rats. This seemed like a strong idea at the time, I pretended to have a clipboard and even posed as someone surveying for the council. Unfortunately nobody took me seriously enough to answer me properly and those that did hadn't seen any rats.

Overall the dark arches supplied a variety of ideas for me to work from however not being able to take my small adventure under the city took a shine off the place. I could choose to make some work in relation to trespassing. Beyond the barrier I jumped there could have been places of great beauty for me to explore, unfortunately these places are hidden and uncelebrated due to rules I don't necessarily agree with. Making a book about land ownership laws and related ethics is however overly cliché for my liking. Thus far I think there is more of an untold story within my research on Kirkstall Abbey.
