3D Craft and Lens, Object As Image

This tasks aims' involved the use of both physical craft and photography. When making 3D pieces photography becomes a large part of the process. Framing the physical work-using lens to successfully communicate the idea was my objective.

I found the way Lord Whitney framed their work to be rather clever - crafting 3D components too fit the frame of the camera, just as we are taught to draw to the frame. This brought me to the conclusion that crafting with quality/economy along with clever use of the frame I could produce something of merit.

Initially in response to the brief I drew mutations on characters that I enjoyed the idea of or thought could be fun to make. I had a few ideas involving fish however stepping away from my visual
language theme appealed as a refresh.

I began to make stalked eyes so I could look behind and in front of me when cycling - this came across as a practical mutation. Before considering how to frame such a mutation Christmas day hit. I received a new coat with furry bits as a Christmas gift. It was only upon use of the hood that I noted the additional feature of spiders. The spiders crawled all over my face which was therapeutic.

My experience with the arachnids was inspiration for my mutation and alike a chilly Spiderman I incorporated a spiders face within the hood.

I painted the spider onto black card and used a glow in the dark paint for the eyes. The paint proved useless being rather weak and impossible to photograph in the dark. Unfortunately the eyes painted in white did not have the desired effect in the light. The inverted image on the right shows how I should have painted the eyes.

Taking a closer shot using a wide angle lens allowed me to frame the painting using the hood. The angle of lens warps images slightly and I attempted to use this to my advantage - putting emphasis on the eyes. I would be the first to admit that my outcomes are quite weird however the story they originate from is also rather strange.

Overall I enjoyed thinking about image making in accordance with lens. I would like to make use of it in the future however I think first I would need to get a more confident grasp of working 3D.
