Considering this new new method of image making (to me) I drew a small handful of ideas for the first crit. Concepts being postcards subverting cities that are criminally dangerous and rats of different cities after seeing a worrying statistic on how many rats live in Paris.
Criminally dangerous cities appealed to me as I have previously looked into visiting one : 'Kowloon' (the walled city) , Just outside Hong kong. Kowloon (before recent it's demolish) was sectioned off as the Chinese government gave up trying to police the community that runs it. It's the aesthetics of the city that interests me - it being the inspiration for majority of the Dredd 3D film. I thought a subversion of the city portraying it as a place of welcoming community and freedom could be humorous.
My concept for rats across different cities I thought could work across a series of postcards using identifiable graphics: such as the London Underground map incorporating rats somehow? Or possibly keeping the rats in France looking at different cities worked in by Blek Le Rat - one of the graffiti founding fathers.
The concepts were received somewhat doubtfully due to my drawings, most comments concerning how I was drawing. It's become clear that I need to work simpler in order to progress successfully into the software. My ideas were criticised for being constricting. The criminal cities needed more research and it was questioned wether there was any where on par with Kowloon for me to work with. The rats was also decidedly to smaller idea and discussion brought up a concept for drawing pests or vermin across different cities.
