Responsive - Illustration Friday - Hat

Hat - a shaped covering for the head worn for warmth, a fashion accessory or as part of a uniform.

In relation to hats my thoughts were; chavs, caps, top hat, winter, victorians, sport, old people, weddings, status, eskimo, bandana, pirates, military, pimp, gentlemen, technological hats, chefs and cowboys.

My research into hats and their functions was more interesting than I had first expected. Reasons for wearing a hat are strange. Looking at a brief history of hats you can see that the bigger your hat the more important you are, this applies to military and other uniforms however its the place in society is that interests me. 150 years or so ago hats were worn by everybody that could afford them, it was a symbol of wealth and obviously the bigger hat you had the wealthier you looked.

I found this hilarious, and had to wonder how big hats get. This in mind I cut this small person with ridiculously large head wear. I took the rough textures from some previous prints that were not printed using the press

Experimenting with variations was fun, I keep trying to push another dimension into to my work using the vectorised shapes. This was successful previously with bold silhouettes however this the outline doesn't add what I'd hoped. I used to work a lot with varied line when drawing however here the two extremes do not marry.
