OUIL505 - Initial Roughs

My initial roughs were done on location. I've started to try and draw everything within the frame as I wont be working with spots as I have previously with print. Drawing something appropriate for use on many different products also a challenge thus far. Considering that each image will have to be used as a book cover as well as just a piece of art to be applied to a range of different products.

Bears are good fun to draw and I am excited to develop the roughs further. I've made use of rather basic shapes for the characters in the bear pit cover as I plan to Linocut the individual limbs and body before assembling them in Photoshop. Some of the shapes will be digitally drawn to gain contrast between cleaner digital lines and what I plan to be the rough printed edges.

St.peters graveyard was difficult to draw for. I decided to look on the story as if the modern world had become between the church and its dead. The train, being representational of this new technology, running across the page between a representation of the church and the headstones. As with the bears I will cut certain parts of the image and print them with the Lino leaving others to be drawn digitally. At the moment I like the idea of printing only the train. The rough textures I hope to produce when printing will convey it's rather immoral use of the graveyard as a foundation giving it a dark presence on the page/pamphlet/screen.

Roughing for the tunnels image was very different to the others. Not having one specific location or character I wanted to compose a very general image that was clearly underground. I plan to cut a negative space in the Lino being representational of a tunnel underneath a structure clearly identifiable as from Leeds.
