My visit to Leeds central library was very useful, I explained to an interested librarian what I was looking for an they produced a small file containing hand written receipts for the sales of animals. All were dated the same year 1907. This leads me to conclude that the animals kept at the zoo were sold before it was closed and lost forever. Unfortunately there were only 6 different documents in the file, each detailing the separate sales of different animals. These were; a Gibraltar monkey, a young Siberian tiger, a camel, a giraffe, a chimp and a zebra. This snippet of information and insight into the kind of animals that lived where I now do was a great starting point for drawing.
My positive research advance now gives me a subject matter to draw from. I began drawing some of the animals that were recorded as being kept at the zoo. Beginning with the Gibraltar monkey that famously has no tail.
Working with collaged shapes helps me keep the design bold and simple - rendering it useable with the lasercutter. I referenced the way this monkey sits loosely to try and inject some character into what could be very boring shape based tail less monkeys.
