Following refinements to the shapes and composition I played again with colour. I had my mind set throughout the project on very cold and subtle colour palettes to match my experience in the location, so I tested the other end of the scale: fiery reds and oranges. I find this completely changes the dynamic of the illustration, setting the scene for a horrific, gargantuan and perhaps blood thirsty, really tall bloke, not what I'm aiming for. Nether the less I was happy with construction of the image that the contrast in these colours hi-lights.
As the brief is a digital entry I left the idea of screen printing this image aside, instead sampling my textures subtle from scanned and edited sugar paper and Lino print textures. I was aiming to keep consistency with my printed work, serving it as my interpretation of Will Eisner's: 'The Spirt'. At this point I also made the compositional decision to crop the feet of the character out of the image as to purposely not specify an end to the character or the water, so the viewer can question weather they are the same thing?
To conclude, I'm very happy with the outcome of this work. I think the narrative element is strong and the way it answers the brief challenging. The brief asked for something different and I would consider this image a great distance of different away from a brief dedicated to the work of Eisner.
An argument to consider could be that I've strayed too far from the brief, however I would argue that Eisner's American aesthetic wouldn't suit a scene of the Lake District, it does not reflect the charming and peaceful people of rural England.
In terms of process I think this brief has been a really exciting experiment, I've developed a way of drawing and working digitally to good success I hope, producing an image that amongst my portfolio stands out for it's narrative content whilst being cohesive with my tone of voice. Unlike my work on the last comic brief I worked with whatever media I wanted and it's in this less controlled state that I work best.
