This self initiated brief came about after repeatedly and vast chats with people at local art markets about tattoos, tattoo artwork and my tattoos. I really like traditional tattoo artwork and have a load of it tattooed onto my skin forever, but I've never really considered wether there is a link between it and the images I make. This is a question that stumped me when last running a stall at Belgrave Music Hall and I thought a project would be a good way to form an answer.
I feel recent success in my work comes from combining hand drawn, digital and printed medias in a sort of collagey way. So the design will consist of a hand drawn / painted tattoo element as well as a digitally collaged and print based process. Why put it on a T shirt? This brief derives from a conversation had at an art market, there fore I'd like to produce a product to sell at upcoming markets and online. This also follows my recent success in selling screen printed shirts, with sales indicating a good demand for more T shirts and new designs.
The traditional panther is without doubt my favorite tattoo design, very black, bold and a bit fierce. I drew this panther head, to use later digitally, referencing a tattoo on my arm. Surprisingly I've never tried to work with the aim to produce something that looks like a tattoo design, everything works in a bit of a reverse leaving white amongst the black in an inverted fashion. Upon completion I could notice the clever use of shape within the image used to suggest detail. I don't make use of shape in this way when I work normally however I can draw similarities between some of the bolder shapes used and that of my work. Maybe this is a link between my work and that of trad tattoo artists?
