The final internal illustration was the most complex composition to build. I referenced the shape of rabbit burrows from factual sources, however constructing a profile burrow with space in witch to insert characters required fictional modifications. Shapes that to begin with looked to wacky and not made by rabbits
I built the burrows using collaged shapes sampled from old misprints. I think the overlaid textures represent the texture of the earth and mud well. To begin with I orientated the image differently to create an epic scenes in the book where the two rabbit gangs chase and fight within the burrow.
I later decided that I the image would be best presented in the book in the same frame as its counterparts, having to push the integral characters and shapes into a smaller space.
The final outcome (left) is my favoured of the series so far, reading the scene and looking to this image makes sense - depicting General Woundwort making his way through the burrow attacking the brave and strong rabbits that waited to delay him as the younger and weaker characters escaped.
