Drawing From Reference

Half a days work on this day involved taking a book from the library and drawing from images within. I made use of a book that looked back on the development of astro technology. The images I worked from are Photographic.

The drawings all had to be made in brush and ink. I decided to keep away from tone and enjoyed referencing small details in the photographs purely with line. I am pleased with the consistency of the drawings however I feel I have played it safe regarding the simplicity.

Overall this exercise has taught me that drawing from reference is completely acceptable and a useful tool in an illustrators practice - working as a professional would not give you the time to draw everything from observation. I learnt that drawing from reference is about using your own tone of voice to create an image simply studying other images for a reference.
