Composition - What Is Composition?

Visual language this week introduced composition. The objective of the first session regarding composition was to understand how frame, arrangement and relationship between visual elements work.

Looking at this piece by Robert Heindel I like the use of foreground/mid/back as well as the overlapping of the character in the mid ground and car in the foreground.

In making my image for the task compositionally I attempted to make use of frame, foreground/mid/back and overlapping. I think the drawing is relatively unsuccessful regarding these techniques. As a smaller rough it made sense however here all I feel there is, is an illusion of foreground/mid/back. Divers being in the fore, submarine mid and shipwreck back.

I also failed to use the frame to great affect. I like the way the lower diver sits in the frame, however I think including more of the other, perhaps framing the submarine, would add to the composition. The composition overall looks slightly dynamic but disjointed, roughing on a larger scale in future might prevent this.
