Composition - Frame and Arrangement

This weeks visual language session looked at how fame can be used to place importance on certain objects within an image. Concentration was also placed upon the advantages of overlapping components.

Prior to the sessions task we studied work by practitioners making use of the frame to prioritise things within an image. I found Laura Callaghan's image (below) to be most striking - cropping the male boss at the top of the image thus empowering the women in the image.

The task involved arranging three things with a frame of my own choosing; an elephant, butterfly, me. With the general understanding that elephants are pretty big I decided to emphasise using the frame. Simultaneously bringing attention to smaller characters fully within the frame.

After roughing I went for this composition that puts all three components into very different lights. Leaving most of the elephant out of the frame emphasises its size and power over the figure that represents me. I also overlapped the smallest and largest elements (elephant/butterfly) again playing with scale.

To conclude I think compositionally I was relatively successful on this task using the frame in a way I have never consciously used before. If I were to do the task again I would make more use of overlapping as I felt the application of it here was a little weak. Perhaps overlapping the elephant and I would make for a better composition.
