Approaching the subject of childhood was challenging for me. I have many fond memories from my childhood but translating them into images was something I haven't really considered before.
A list of things that I would associate with my childhood are as follows; bikes, swimming, rabbits, snails, parents, brother, family, Kelling Heath, badminton, rugby, drawing, car boots, and being smaller than I am now.
The things I remember quite a lot from my childhood are my pet rabbits and everything seeming bigger than it does now. Combing these I decided to make a large rabbit. I've used scale with effect before and i'd like to employ it here in a simple way. Still in a screen printing mindset I used the silhouette of a rabbit to frame my linocut, an early idea i'd had with another of my Lino cuts this year.
Im rather happy with the composition and the textures work nicely with the desaturated colours, looks weathered - being a nod at childhood, something that for me has past or getting further away. Working with shape in this way is still somewhat experimental for me even after my 504 work.
To me this image is successful in that it says something about my childhood. Aesthetically I enjoy the washed and desaturated colours, however from a distance it can appear a little flat.
