'Punch' is my first submission for the 'Illustration Friday' brief. I've chosen to work this brief as I can work it in parallel with my other modules. So far this year I've been using Lino a lot and I want to push this. I can take advantage of these short weekly briefs in order to experiment with different techniques using Lino.
I have said before that I'd like to marry my drawing skills and the printmaking so that's where I've started...
Words that came to mind associated with Punch; scary puppets, violence, attack, theatre, seaside, drink, alcohol, fake joints, impact, juice, boxing, sport, domestic, nightmares, hole punch, pier.
Most of my ideas resulted in puppet related things so I went with that. The Punch and Judy puppets used to give me nightmares as a child. I still don't really understand why they're used for children's entertainment.
To reflect my rather dark view of the puppets I combined a drawing of punch with counterpart hat and collar, the collaged photo of an ear adds something really creepy for me.
Overall I like the textures achieved with the printed parts, working well with the dark theme, however the pencil drawing against the black printed areas doesn't really work. As much I'll hate it it's probably in my best interests to leave the pencil to one side for now and push my printing. Looking ahead with this brief I'd like to start experimenting more with my prints digitally, applying textures and making use of the pen tool.
