Responsive - Penguin Design Awards - A Clockwork Orange

Having decided on my strongest composition I cut the all components in Lino. The hat, arms, mask and main body were all cut separately. Smaller details such as the key above the hat were painted. After editing and applying textures individually I brought all the parts together into Photoshop in order to play with the composition inside the briefs' specified dimensions.

I experimented with many small adjustments to the character. I still have a few final decisions to make regarding what visual devices I include, such as the eyelashes. To me they give alex a even darker edge and it is a common symbol associated with the film. The hat is something I'm sure of now, I'm fond of the addition of the key as well. I think the hat and key make a nice graphic, maybe something I include on the back of the cover.

So far I've not paid to much attention to the provided template and text (excluding the fixed penguin logos). Applying the text will be the most challenging part of this brief for me as I have very little knowledge / experience of working with type. The text I've added at this point is awful and purely functional in helping me lay out the rest of the image. With this in mind I conducted a little research into previous penguin award winners. This beautiful 'Moby-Dick' cover caught my eye. The Gill Sans text has a great classic aesthetic, just what I was looking for in terms of originality.

The flat background orange of the image this far was really not exciting me. I took to the print room to screen print some marbled textures. This is my favourite, I think the orange and hints of the contrasting blue works well. The way the ink has dried achieves a great texture that to me resembles the peel of an orange - ideal.
